Melt Index

Melt Index (MI) testing measures the flow properties of a polymer in its molten state, providing insight into its processability. The test determines how many grams of the polymer flow through a specific orifice under controlled temperature and pressure over 10 minutes.

• MI (Melt Index) is commonly used for low-flow rate polymers, like polyethylene and polypropylene.

• HLMI (High Load Melt Index) applies to higher-flow polymers, using greater weights for testing.

• Melt Flow Rate (MFR) refers to the overall measure of a polymer's flow characteristics, encompassing both MI and HLMI values.

This test helps manufacturers optimize materials for specific applications, such as film production, packaging, or molding.
